I grew up in Modesto, California. Modesto is famous for having the most per capita of lots of bad things: pedestrian deaths, fast food restaurants, teen pregnancy, meth labs, house foreclosures, as well as the fewest college degrees per capita. Despite this, it was a nice place to grow up.
But as soon as I was able, I moved to Portland, Oregon, the city with the most per capita of nice things: library circulation, independent bookstores, coffee shops, micro-breweries, micro-distilleries, (and strip clubs). Enjoying the most per capita of both extremes has been a defining part of my whole life, so it seemed an appropriate title for my blog.
